Accra: It's the end of the road for the four contenders at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup ongoing in the United States of America (USA).According to Ghana News Agency, not even African giants and big spenders Al Ahly of Egypt could secure a round of 16 berth, despite their enviable record in the competition where they have placed third on four occasions since the tournament began. Al Ahly managed only two draws and a loss in a group that included Lionel Messi's Inter Miami, which was insufficient to advance them to the next round.Expectations were briefly high for South African side Mamelodi Sundowns, Africa's last hope at the revamped 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, as they seemed poised to advance to the next stage. However, a draw against Fluminense left them with four points, not enough to progress into the round of 16. They previously faced a narrow defeat against German side Borussia Dortmund, losing 4-3 in an exciting match, despite having won their opener against Ulsan HD from South Korea.Esperance of T unisia managed only one win and two defeats, resulting in their exit from the group stages of the competition. They faced formidable opponents like Chelsea and Brazilian Flamengo during the championships.Morocco's Wydad Casablanca also exited the competition, having failed to earn any points after three matches. With just one match remaining in their group, even a win would not enable them to advance. They will play against Al Ain in a match that holds only for pride. The competition is set to enter the next phase on Saturday, promising some exciting matchups.
