Accra: In a move to strengthen public service education, Accra Metropolitan University (Accra Met) has awarded 20 full tuition scholarships to members of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). This initiative marks the first time any university has extended such an offer to the Service.
According to Ghana News Agency, the announcement was made during a high-level meeting between Madam Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, Chief Fire Officer of the GNFS, and Professor Goski Alabi, Accra Met's President. Present at the meeting were top-ranking officers including Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO) James Owusu-Agyei, DCFO Heroine Sekyere Boakye, DCFO Frances Rockson, DCFO Mark Brako-Appiah, DCFO Doris Lamptey, DCFO James O. Y. Kwateng, and DCFO Jennifer N. Y. Quaye.
Madam Ntow Sarpong expressed excitement, noting this milestone was especially meaningful during her tenure. She stated, 'This is a significant milestone for the Fire Service. It reflects the growing recognition of the importance of fire safety and professional training.'
Accra Met, as Ghana's first open university and the second in West Accra, delivers 80 per cent of its programmes virtually, offering flexible learning and access to over 30,000 e-library resources. The University is also known for programmes in finance, recognised by ICA, and student-friendly PhDs.
Prof Alabi reaffirmed Accra Met's commitment to public service. 'We're proud to support the GNFS. As an open university, we're making education more inclusive and adaptable for professionals across all sectors,' he said. Plans are underway to offer tuition discounts for future GNFS intakes, demonstrating the university's commitment to long-term collaboration.
