Keta: Mr. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for prioritizing the Keta Port project.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Gunu stated that the project is anticipated to be transformative, offering significant economic advantages and opportunities for regional growth.
Mr. Gunu, speaking during a public hearing on the proposed Keta Port project, highlighted that it is expected to invigorate the local economy, generate employment, and encourage trade and industrialization in the region. He added that it would also enhance Ghana's maritime logistics capacity, opening new trade corridors with neighboring countries. He stressed the importance of community support for the government and various authorities to realize the project's potential.
The minister further noted that the government is committed to completing the project and has engaged with traditional leaders and stakeholders to ensure it benefits the local community. The public hearing was held to discuss the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Keta Port project, providing a platform for stakeholders to voice concerns and offer input.
Mr. Gunu assured that the government is dedicated to transparency and accountability throughout the project's implementation, aiming to minimize environmental impacts while maximizing community benefits. He emphasized that the project, part of the government's broader efforts to develop the Volta Region, is expected to create numerous jobs, both direct and indirect, in sectors such as logistics and transportation.
Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Board Chairman of Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority, encouraged coastal residents to collaborate with project workers to ensure smooth execution. He expressed satisfaction with public contributions and reiterated the port's potential as the third gateway to neighboring countries, promising economic benefits that would positively impact the public.
Madam Nana Ama Brown Klutsey, CEO of the Environmental Protection Authority, mentioned that various studies have been conducted, and ongoing efforts are addressing potential impacts on residents. She reassured the public of the government's commitment to sustainability and addressing concerns.
Residents expressed optimism about the project's completion, despite concerns about environmental impacts. They urged the government, GPHA, and EPA to implement mechanisms and alternative plans to manage unforeseen situations, viewing the project as a milestone in the region's development with lasting community benefits.
