Tipper Truck Driver Arrested Following Fatal Crash Near University of Cape Coast

Cape Coast: The tipper truck driver involved in a tragic accident that resulted in the death of one person and injuries to five others near the West Gate of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has been apprehended by the police for further investigation.

According to Ghana News Agency, the incident, which occurred on Thursday, June 19, 2025, claimed the life of 19-year-old Wilfred Awusi Ninson. The Central Regional Police Command has released a statement detailing the events leading up to the crash. The driver, identified as Bright Essel, 29, was operating a Donfeng tipper truck with registration number GN 5710-19, loaded with sand, traveling from Bronyibima towards DVLA junction in Cape Coast.

The accident happened when Essel lost control of the truck as it approached the UCC West Gate section of the main Cape Coast-Takoradi-Accra Highway. The truck veered off its lane, crossed the median, and collided with two cars and a tricycle. George Ayensu Peters, 26, was riding an Apsonic motor tricycle at the time of the crash.

The victims, including Ms. Ansah, Mr. Kum, and the tricycle rider, were waiting in traffic on the Accra-bound section of the road when the tipper truck unexpectedly struck them, causing significant damage to all vehicles involved. A viral CCTV footage has confirmed these details.

The injured were immediately transported to the University of Cape Coast hospital for medical attention. Tragically, Wilfred Awusi Ninson was declared dead upon arrival. His body has been placed in the hospital's morgue for preservation and autopsy. The remaining victims are reportedly in stable condition and are receiving treatment.

The police continue to investigate the incident, and the driver remains in custody to assist with the ongoing inquiries.
