Accra: The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), together with the National Investigation Bureau (NIB), has successfully destroyed over 16,000 kilograms of illicit drugs. The operation took place at the Bundase Military Camp located in the Ningo-Prampram District.

According to Ghana News Agency, the illicit drugs included various substances such as 113.348 kilograms of cocaine, 10.45 kilograms of heroin, 1934.273 kilograms of cannabis, 2.00 kilograms of methamphetamine, 0.644 kilograms of MDMA (ecstasy), 1.099 kilograms of ketamine, 15.1 kilograms of cathinone, and a large quantity of codeine, diclofenac, and hyergra. Additionally, 3,313 kilograms of cocaine seized by the NIB were also destroyed. The Ghana Standards Authority verified the drugs through on-site tests before the public, ensuring transparency in the destruction process.

Brigadier-General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, Director-General of NACOC, highlighted that the exercise was conducted to commemorate World Drug Day. He emphasized the commission's commitment to transparency and the rule of law by carrying out the destruction in a safe and controlled environment. The event also underscored the efforts against drug trafficking and the need for cooperation from the public and media to expose perpetrators.

Mr. Alexander Twum-Barima, Deputy Director-General in charge of Enforcement, Control, and Elimination, announced a new collaboration with the Pharmacy Council. The council has assured that any pharmacy found dealing in illicit drugs would face closure and license revocation. Twum-Barima warned those involved in illegal drug activities to cease immediately, as the commission has gathered intelligence across multiple regions and plans to launch targeted operations starting next month.
