Accra: Mr. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Minister of Transport, has announced that the Tema Shipyard has been fully revamped and is now operational as a strategic national facility, following directives from President John Dramani Mahama.According to Ghana News Agency, the Tema Shipyard, originally constructed by Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah for ship repair, maintenance, and overhaul, had been non-operational for several years. Mr. Nikpe revealed these developments during his address at the Government Accountability Series press conference held at the Presidency in Accra.He highlighted that the shipyard's first dock's main pump has been redesigned and reconstructed to enhance docking time, while the second dock has been reactivated and its offices rehabilitated for full operation. These advancements have also led to job creation, with the shipyard implementing a three-shift system in alignment with the 24-Hour Economy Policy.In the aviation sector, Mr. Nikpe reported on the extension of the Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport runway from 1,981 meters to 2,320 meters to accommodate medium-sized aircraft and support international flight operations. The project is 90 percent complete and expected to conclude by year-end. Additionally, night operations have been extended at both the Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport and Tamale International Airport, enhancing passenger convenience and supporting the 24-Hour Economy Policy.
