Teacher Sentenced to 10 Years for Bank Theft Using Mobile App


Asante Bekwai: A 36-year-old teacher from Freso SDA Junior High School in the Bekwai Municipality has been handed a 10-year prison sentence with hard labour by the Asante Bekwai circuit court. The teacher, John Ankomah Boateng, was convicted for the theft of over GHS238,550 from the Bosomefreho Rural Bank Limited through the GhanaPay app, despite having a mere GHS2.23 in his account.



According to Ghana News Agency, Boateng pleaded guilty to the charges and was convicted based on his own admission by the court presided over by Mr. Isaac Apietu. Detective Chief Inspector Eric Twum, who led the prosecution, reported that the crime took place between February 09 and February 26, 2024. The incident was brought to the attention of the Ashanti South Regional CID on February 28, leading to Boateng’s arrest on March 13, 2024.



During interrogation, Boateng admitted to the offense and disclosed that he had transferred the stolen funds to acquaintances for safekeeping. Specifically, he transferred GHS10,000 to an individual named Isaac, GHS5,000 to Kwaku, GHS20,000 to Duah, and GHS5,000 to someone known as Neymar. Additionally, he sent GHS40,000 to a travel agent for the processing of travel documents.



Chief Inspector Twum stated that after a comprehensive investigation, Boateng was formally charged and brought before the court, culminating in his conviction and sentencing.
