Nkoranza: Only seven female candidates are contesting in the upcoming District Assembly Elections in the Nkoranza North and Nkoranza South in the Bono East Region, Dr. Gabriel Dei Yeboah, the Bono East Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, has said. The winners would represent the interest of their respective constituents in the decision-making processes of the Assemblies.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Yeboah explained that the female candidates represented only four percent of the total number of the 194 candidates vying in the elections, scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, 2025. In an interview, Dr. Yeboah also noted that two candidates, both males, have filed to contest the Atebubu-Amantin bye-election. This bye-election followed the demise of Moro Issah, the incumbent Assembly Member for the Dagarti-line Electoral Area, who passed away a month after winning the elections.
The Electoral Commission, in a statement, announced the mounting of campaign platforms for candidates to engage with their constituents, sharing their manifestoes and visions between Friday, May 9, and Sunday, May 11. This campaign aims to enable the electorate to make informed decisions when they go to the polls.
Dr. Yeboah provided a breakdown of candidates, stating that 95 candidates, comprising 93 males and three females, are vying in Nkoranza North, which has 26 Electoral Areas. He also mentioned that Nkoranza South has 29 Electoral Areas and 94 candidates, including two females. The campaign platform activities began on Friday, May 9, and have been successfully conducted in some of the Electoral Areas.
Dr. Yeboah commended the level of comportment and maturity exhibited by the candidates and their supporters, acknowledging their participation. He expressed optimism that the campaigns and the elections, in general, would be successful and peaceful.
