Sefwi Bia SHTS Triumphs in Western North Renewable Energy Challenge

Sefwi Bia: Sefwi Bia Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in the Bia West District has emerged victorious in the Sixth edition of the Western North Regional Renewable Energy Challenge Competition for Senior High Schools (SHSs). The school will now represent the region at the zonal level.

According to Ghana News Agency, Sefwi Bia SHTS clinched the top position with a project focused on designing and building a multi-purpose solar-powered tiller aimed at performing labor-intensive farm operations and tree crop production. The school scored 82.3 points, outpacing Sefwi Wiawso Senior High School, which secured second place with 72.7 points, and St Joseph SHS, which came in third with 69 points.

Queens SHS earned 68 points to place fourth, while the host school, STEM SHS, secured fifth place with 66.7 points. Asawinso SHS and Juaboso SHS followed, placing sixth and seventh with 63.3 points and an undisclosed score, respectively.

The competition was organized by the Energy Commission in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service under the theme: 'Sustainable for a Healthy Future.' Mr. Julius Nkansah-Nyanko, the General Manager of the Renewable Energy Commission, highlighted the event as a bridge between academia and industry, offering students the chance to apply theoretical knowledge to practical solutions benefiting communities and the nation.

Mr. Nkansah-Nyanko also emphasized the challenge as a flagship program of the Energy Commission, showcasing their commitment to nurturing creativity, innovation, and sustainability among the youth. He noted that the competition is divided into Southern and Northern Zones, from which three schools from each zone will be selected to compete in the grand finale in Accra.

Mr. Joseph Agyabeng, Principal of Awaso STEM SHS, speaking on behalf of the Western North Regional Director of Education, expressed gratitude to the organizers, sponsors, teachers, and students for their efforts. He acknowledged the projects presented by participating schools for demonstrating their understanding of complex problems and solutions. He also congratulated the winners and encouraged them to prepare diligently for the zonal level competition.
