Kumbungu: School for Life, an NGO, has launched a reading initiative at Kumbungu D/A Junior High School (JHS) in the Northern Region to encourage reading among pupils.
According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative, dubbed 'Bright Future Readers Club', aims to improve learners' academic performance and build their confidence to reach their full potential. It is designed to benefit a total of 60 pupils in the school.
During the launch, executives were elected to lead and manage the Club's activities. The event also provided a platform for pupils to showcase their public speaking and literacy skills through poem recitations and reading sessions.
Mr. Mohammed Mutaru Alhassan, Advocacy and Policy Influencing Officer at School for Life, speaking during the launch at Kumbungu, stated that the Club builds on a previous intervention by the organization, which involved the donation of over 700 assorted books, including storybooks, novels, and textbooks. He mentioned that the initiative aligns with School for Life's broader literacy agenda, which includes strengthening school libraries, promoting reading for pleasure, and equipping students with lifelong learning skills. He remarked, "We celebrate this milestone as a tangible step toward measurable literacy improvement, especially in rural Ghana."
He also commended Book Aid International for donating books to support the effective running of the Club. Mr. Mustapha Adam, a Teacher at Kumbungu D/A JHS, praised the initiative and pledged to support the Club to enhance positive learning outcomes. Miss Musharifa Abdul-Wahab, School Prefect and President of the Club, commented, "This Club is timely and will help us improve our writing and speaking skills."
