Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has opened this year's New Year school with a call for a robust investment to uplift the vulnerable in society. That, the President stressed, was important to enable the citizenry to pursue their dreams and contribute meaningfully to society.
According to Ghana News Agency, President John Dramani Mahama conveyed this message through a speech delivered on his behalf by Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang at the opening ceremony of the 2025 Annual New Year School Conference in Accra. The event focused on the theme: 'Attaining the 5 Ps of Sustainable Development for a Resilient Ghana: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership.'
The President emphasized the significance of the five Ps of sustainable development, which are designed to guide development agendas, policies, and practices toward achieving desired outcomes. He highlighted the importance of focusing on people to ensure social inclusion, gender equity, and human rights, asserting that people-centered initiatives are vital for enhancing social security.
President Mahama also discussed the need to protect and restore ecosystems, promoting responsible production and consumption of biodiversity to sustain the planet for future generations. He underscored the necessity of reducing poverty and achieving economic independence to ensure prosperity for the citizens.
Further, he pointed out the crucial role of partnerships in mobilizing resources, sharing knowledge, and implementing effective strategies within a peaceful and inclusive community. The government, he stated, is committed to creating opportunities for citizens to enjoy sustainable growth across various levels.
Reflecting on last year's conference, President Mahama mentioned the Digital Youth Hub project, which aims to equip young people with digital entrepreneurial skills crucial for success in a 24-hour economy. He urged stakeholders to engage with local initiatives, form strategic partnerships, and leverage technology and relationships to drive transformative change.
Acknowledging the resilience of the Ghanaian people, President Mahama noted their ability to overcome challenges with determination. He expressed optimism that the discussions and outcomes from the conference would significantly influence the national agenda.
