Accra: The Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has charged the newly sworn-in National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Madam Ewurabena Aubynn, to remain diligent and committed to her constituents. Following her swearing-in on Tuesday by the Speaker on the Floor of the House, Mr. Bagbin congratulated Madam Aubynn and emphasized the weight of public service.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Bagbin highlighted the importance of maintaining the trust of the people. "You are now the hope of the people in the constituency. They are looking up to you to do something to improve their lives. It is a trust, and this I pray you don't abuse," he stated. He further warned, "Four years is just a day. You will go back to them, and they will assess you this time based on your performance. So please don't be misled by other people."
Mr. Bagbin advised the new MP to be punctual and present in Parliament, urging her to learn from her colleagues and to be diligent in her duties. "Be calm, listen more, learn from your colleagues, but please read everything." he added.
Madam Aubynn's swearing-in followed a contentious parliamentary re-run in Ablekuma North, where she emerged victorious with 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating her New Patriotic Party (NPP) counterpart, Madam Akua Owusu Afriyieh. The swearing-in ceremony was marred by a walkout from the NPP Minority Caucus in protest over the Speaker's decision to deny Minority Chief Whip, Mr. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, an opportunity to make a statement he had earlier requested.
