Nkwanta: The Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, on the advice of the Oti Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument, reviewed the curfew hours for Nkwanta township and its environs in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region from 1800 to 0500 hours effective Thursday, June 26, 2025.
According to Ghana News Agency, this action stems from renewed tensions in the area, resulting in gunshots, burning of stores, property destruction, and two injuries. The violence was triggered when the Akyodes performed rituals at the market on Wednesday to usher in the new yam, which incensed the Challas.
The government continues to urge chiefs, opinion leaders, the youth, and residents of the area to exercise restraint amidst these challenges and to opt for non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace.
Meanwhile, there is a total ban on carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons in the Nkwanta township and its environs. Individuals found with any arms or ammunition will face arrest and prosecution.
Mr. Joseph Antwi Awal, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Nkwanta South, confirmed the incident to Ghana News Agency. The dispute centered around the market square, where the purification rite was held, with two groups holding differing opinions despite the Oti Regional Security Council's suspension of the 2025 Gyogyi Yam Festival over security concerns.
