Sunyani: The Sunyani Area office of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has successfully recovered GHC 1.6 million in outstanding debts from its customers. Mr. Eugene Odoi Addo, the Area Manager, announced the recovery on Tuesday as part of a focused revenue mobilization and loss control exercise being conducted by the company.
According to Ghana News Agency, the exercise commenced with the aim of collecting GHC 20 million from customers in the Sunyani area, who collectively owe approximately GHC 318 million in unpaid electricity bills. The initiative, which will span two weeks, targets a diverse group of debtors, including government institutions, non-governmental agencies, and postpaid customers. Mr. Addo noted that structured payment agreements have been established with many clients, facilitating the fund recovery process without confrontation.
Mr. Addo highlighted the persistent issue of customers' reluctance to voluntarily settle their bills, which has prompted the need for periodic collection campaigns. He emphasized that the operations are designed to ensure NEDCo can meet its obligations to creditors while encouraging prompt payment to avoid penalties. He also acknowledged the challenges associated with transitioning customers from postpaid to prepaid meters and indicated that NEDCo has developed strategies to enhance prepaid meter penetration, particularly in regional and district capitals.
