Accra: The National Theatre of Ghana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Image Bureau and April Communications to collaborate on the production and staging of one of Africa’s most iconic plays, ‘Death and the King’s Horseman.’
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Henry Herbert Malm, the Acting Executive Director of the National Theatre, emphasized that the partnership aligns with the Theatre’s mission to support the development and promotion of the performing arts industry. Since its opening in 1992, the National Theatre has been dedicated to advancing the arts, and this collaboration is seen as a continuation of its longstanding commitment.
Mr. Malm further explained that the MOU would not only foster industry growth but also create jobs and spread positive societal messages. He highlighted the Theatre’s role in hosting the play and expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming publicity efforts. The Theatre’s resident groups will provide support to ensure the success of the program, aiming to reach a broad audience with impactful messages.
Mr. George Quaye, Chief Executive Officer of Image Bureau, noted that the play was penned by Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka of Nigeria and is inspired by a true story. The production seeks to underscore themes of loyalty, commitment, and the preservation of African cultural and traditional practices. Quaye emphasized the significance of such plays in illuminating cultural traditions and their relevance in contemporary society.
Quaye revealed that the production involves a crew and cast of over 150 people, promising an exhilarating experience for theatre enthusiasts. Despite the challenges and costs associated with the play, he expressed optimism about the collaboration’s potential for success, thanks to the support from the National Theatre.
The play is set to be staged on August 23, 24, 30, and 31 at the main auditorium of the National Theatre, with expectations of redefining theatre in Africa and providing an unforgettable experience for audiences.
