Keta: Some commuters in the Keta municipality of the Volta Region have appealed to driver unions within the area to reduce transport fares following the recent nationwide reduction in fuel prices.
According to Ghana News Agency, the commuters believe that the reduction in fuel prices at various pumps as well as LPG price adjustments should be reflected in the cost of transportation.
Madam Gifty Nyonator, a businesswoman at Abutiakope, a suburb of Keta, expressed concern over drivers' reluctance to reduce transport fares despite the drop in fuel prices. She noted that petrol prices have decreased to GHC 12.38 per liter and diesel prices to GHC 12.88 per liter, and expects transport fares to align with these reductions.
Residents are calling on the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport operators to pass on the benefits of the fuel price reduction to commuters. Madam Dovlo also called for a review of the current lorry fare structure to provide relief to those relying on public transportation for daily activities.
Mr. Senyo Amemasor, a resident of Abor, emphasized the importance of a fair transport fare structure to ensure affordable transportation services while maintaining the viability of transport operators' businesses. He urged the GPRTU to engage with stakeholders to determine a reasonable fare structure that considers operational costs, including fuel prices.
Some drivers in Keta, however, mentioned that the reduction in petrol and diesel prices was not sufficient to lower transport fares. They also expressed concerns over a potential ?1.00 fuel levy being considered by the government, which could burden drivers further.
Mr. Lawrence Awilo Attito, the Volta Regional Public Relations Officer, stated that the union leadership plans to hold a meeting to address the situation promptly and in the best interest of all parties.
Checks at various fuel pumps revealed varying petrol and diesel prices as of June 20, 2025. Petrol prices ranged from GH? 11.98 to GH? 12.40 per liter, while diesel prices varied from GH? 12.79 to GH? 13.10 per liter. LPG prices for refilling a 6 kg cylinder ranged from GH? 30 to GH? 60, with fluctuations based on factors such as location and global crude oil prices.
