Minister Inaugurates Governing Boards for Transport Sector Agencies

Accra: Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Minister of Transport, has officially inaugurated the Governing Boards for three key agencies within the transport sector, emphasizing the need for board members to avoid interference in the day-to-day management of these institutions. The agencies include the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), and the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT).

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Nikpe urged the newly re-constituted boards to adhere to principles of good governance and work collaboratively with management to meet the objectives set by both the Government and the organizations themselves. The inauguration ceremony took place on Wednesday in Accra, where Mr Nikpe highlighted the importance of the institutions in delivering on their mandates while the Government provided policy direction and guidelines.

The Minister specifically tasked the GPHA Board with reducing business costs at the ports and exploring private sector partnerships to develop Keta Port as a complementary hub for petroleum product delivery. For the MMT, he highlighted its critical role in implementing a welfare system for citizens aged 60 and above. Meanwhile, the GMA was charged with maintaining safety and security in the maritime sector, which he noted would enhance operations and positively impact other sectors of the Ghanaian economy.

Mr Nikpe emphasized the need for the boards to operate under the supervision of the Ministry and not engage with other authorities without prior consultation. He assured the Ministry's support and openness to feedback, aligning with the government's broader transformational agenda.

The GPHA Board is chaired by Mr Johnson Aseidu Nketia and comprises members such as Brigadier General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono and Mrs Mabel Asi Sagoe, among others. The GMA Board, chaired by Madam Jemilat Jawulaa Mahamah, includes members like Dr Kamal-Deen Ali and Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing. The MMT Board is led by Okogyeman Kweku Gyamprah III, with members such as Mr Kale Cezar and Mr Eric Tetteh Addision.

The Chairpersons of the GMA and MMT Boards expressed their readiness to work within legal boundaries and ensure their organizations contribute effectively to national development.
