Nkawie: A 23-year-old illegal miner has been jailed for five years by the Nkawie Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti region for stealing three mobile phones at Atwima Nweneso. Francis Amadu, also known as Kojo Amadu, pleaded guilty and was convicted on his own plea.
According to Ghana News Agency, Police Detective Inspector Dickson Kwaku Frimpong, who was prosecuting, informed the court presided over by Mr. Robert Addo that the complainant, Eric Eyezera, and the convict were residents of Nweneso Number One. On March 29, at approximately 0300 hours, the complainant and his brother were asleep when Amadu sneaked into their room and took their Techno Spark 20, HOMII flip, and Itel keypad mobile phones, all valued at GHc 3,350.00.
The prosecution detailed that as the convict attempted to leave with the phones, the complainant and his brother awoke and saw him. Though Amadu fled, they pursued him hotly. Despite his initial escape, a report was made to the Unit Committee Member of the town, resulting in the formation of a search party to locate the convict.
The prosecution further explained that Amadu was eventually arrested at his hideout in Nweneso with the phones in his possession and was handed over to the Atwima Hwidiem police. He admitted his crime in a caution statement and, following further investigations, was charged and brought before the court.
