Hohoe: Mr Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, the Member of Parliament for the Hohoe Constituency, has emphasized the urgent need to solidify lasting peace between the Alavanyo and Nkonya Traditional Areas. He has engaged in progressive discussions with the Biakoye MP to bridge the divide and consolidate peace efforts through multiple approaches, including upgrading the road linking the two traditional areas.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Tsekpo addressed traditional authorities at Alavanyo during the Volta Regional Minister’s working visit to the Municipality. He stressed the importance of peace to spur development, foster cooperation, and coexistence between the areas. He reiterated the importance of improving the road between the two towns for easier access and avoiding the Kpando route, as part of the peace-building measures.
Mr Tsekpo, who hails from Alavanyo, stated that securing peace would benefit future generations. He also mentioned plans for upgrading two second-cycle institutions in the constituency with the assistance of GETFund. The area’s tourism potential, including the Alavanyo Abehenease waterfall and the tomb of the first Miss Ghana, was also highlighted.
Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, commended the Alavanyo Traditional Area for providing 100 acres of land for a National Signal Bureau training school. He mentioned the government’s plans to revive an abandoned cocoa processing factory in the Hohoe enclave as part of the 24-Hour Economy initiative. Mr Gunu appealed for land availability to attract investors for cocoa and coffee plantation cultivation.
Mr Prosper Kumi, the Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, noted that educational, water, and health needs were included in the Assembly’s plans. He mentioned ongoing exploration of investment opportunities to boost the local economy, including the establishment of a National Signals Bureau Training School at Alavanyo.
Togbega Tsedze Atakora VII, the Paramount Chief of the Alavanyo Traditional Area, expressed readiness for peaceful cooperation with the Nkonya Area and called for strengthened security. He remarked on the century-old conflict between Alavanyo and Nkonya and expressed hope for enduring peace. He also highlighted the need for re-engineering the bridge on River Dayi and the release of lands for development and investment projects.
