Government Pledges to Enhance Working Conditions and Job Creation

Hohoe: Mr. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, has announced the government’s commitment to strengthening dialogue with stakeholders to ensure that job creation, wage adjustments, and improved working conditions are realized. He emphasized that these objectives should become tangible realities, not just aspirations.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Gunu, speaking at the Volta and Oti Regional edition of the 2025 May Day celebration in Hohoe, highlighted that enhancing working conditions requires courage, honesty, and collaboration. He stated that public servants, private sector actors, municipal assemblies, traditional leaders, and unions deserve better working conditions, which the government is determined to provide.

Mr. Gunu reiterated the government’s promise to lead by example, promoting living wages instead of minimum wages and fostering workplace equity, health, and safety. Additionally, the government aims to formalize labor export programs to offer more opportunities while protecting the dignity of Ghanaian workers abroad.

Mr. John Kwadwo Gyapong, Oti Regional Minister, praised the workers for their hard work and contributions to national development. He urged the Trades Union Congress (TUC-Ghana) to establish its Secretariat in the Oti Region to promote decentralization.

Dan Sosoo, Volta/Oti Regional Chairman of TUC-Ghana, stated the necessity of ensuring that the government’s Reset Agenda begins with a change in mindset. He noted that workers have accepted a 10 percent pay increase due to economic challenges but are hopeful for better wages as the economy improves.

Edith Abla Amenuvor Afewu, Volta/Oti Regional Secretary of TUC-Ghana, highlighted the burden on workers due to the economic crisis, including rising living costs, inflationary shocks, and declining real incomes. She pointed out the significant pay inequities between the political class and public sector workers, as well as between State-Owned Enterprises and those on the Single Spine Salary Structure.

Mr. Prosper Kumi, Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, reassured that the Assembly is committed to creating an environment that supports the growth and development of workers. He mentioned that the Municipality has benefited from programs recently launched by President John Dramani Mahama.

The event concluded with workers from various unions receiving awards. The ceremony was themed: ‘Resetting Pay and Working Conditions in Ghana: The Role of Stakeholders’.
