GNCCI Urges Government to Leverage Digital Tools for Enhanced Property Tax Revenue

Accra: The Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) has called on the government to enhance its efforts to generate revenue from property tax by leveraging the Property Address System and other digital tools. This initiative should include strengthening the capacity of Assemblies to effectively collect property tax.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Stephane Miezan, the President of GNCCI, emphasized the importance of widening the tax base to alleviate the burden on compliant taxpayers and addressing tax non-compliance through prudent measures. Speaking at the 49th Annual General Meeting of the Chamber, themed 'Strengthening Local Businesses for Sustainable Growth and Development,' Mr. Miezan urged the government to consider reinstating the road toll and formalizing the informal sector with incentives, e-VAT filing, tax amnesties, and business tax platforms linked to the Ghana Card.

The Chamber also hopes the upcoming 2026 budget will introduce policies that stimulate private sector growth. Mr. Miezan expressed the GNCCI's readiness to collaborate with the government to address critical issues affecting the private sector, aiming for sustainable growth and development in Ghana.

Reaffirming the Chamber's commitment, Mr. Miezan stated the importance of working closely with the government and key stakeholders to improve the business environment and promote sustainable economic growth. He encouraged collective efforts towards adopting sustainable business practices to strengthen local enterprises and ensure long-term national development.

The Chamber also advocates for a downward review of existing taxes, including simplifying and consolidating VAT and levies into a single transparent VAT rate. Mr. Miezan called for a reduction in VAT and the removal of the COVID-19 levy, which he argued has outlived its relevance. Additionally, he urged the introduction of turnover- and employment-based corporate tax thresholds and the removal of VAT on insurance premiums to enhance accessibility for households and MSMEs.
