Moknine: A fourth fatality was reported Tuesday in Moknine, governorate of Monastir, as downpours have been lashing the region since Monday, Regional Director of Civil Protection Raouf Marouani told TAP. The body of a woman was found floating in the Sebkha of Moknine.
According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, three people had died earlier in Moknine as torrential rain swept the region. The body of a man was recovered on Tuesday in the Sebkha of Moknine, the official told TAP previously. The body of an unidentified woman submerged by floodwater was also found in the town.
A septuagenarian woman with disabilities died as her home was flooded. "The governorate of Monastir did not feature on the list of highest weather warnings and we have been taken aback by the scope of adverse climatic events and downpours, though civil protection units were ready to respond," Marouani further said.
Response actions mainly took place in Moknine, Monastir, and Ksar Hellal, involving floodwater pumping, removing cars trapped in floods, and securing highways. Rainfall over the last 24 hours in Moknine reached 92mm, hitting 230mm in Monastir, 242mm in Sayada-Lamta-Bou Hjar, 92mm in Jammel, and 70mm in Teboulba.
