Accra: Dr Kofi Mbiah, a Maritime Law Consultant, has paid tribute to the late Alhaji Asoma Banda for his significant contributions to the maritime sector, noting his recognition within European shipping circles.
According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Mbiah highlighted Alhaji Banda's forthright nature and his adept handling of complex issues, which earned him respect and acknowledgement in European shipping communities.
In a tribute shared with the Ghana News Agency in Tema, Dr Mbiah recounted a memorable meeting in Houston where international colleagues were eager to meet "The Banda," illustrating Banda's esteemed reputation in the shipping industry. He described Banda as a business magnate, a mogul, and a shipping icon whose entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen left a lasting impact on Ghana's maritime landscape.
Dr Mbiah worked closely with Alhaji Banda on several boards, including the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and the Ghana Maritime Authority, over many years. He fondly remembered Banda sharing his extensive knowledge and history, particularly when lecturing MBA students at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration.
Alhaji Banda's journey from a cattle transporter in Mali to a globally recognized business figure was marked by notable achievements. His advocacy for the removal of the European Union block exemption in the shipping industry underscored his commitment to globalization and free trade, leading to significant changes in the Europe-West African shipping trades.
Dr Mbiah credited Alhaji Banda's early transport ventures as the foundation of his interest in the transportation sector, which saw him excel in road haulage, aviation, and maritime services. Alhaji Banda was instrumental in establishing the Tema Container Terminal and introducing Roll on Roll Off Services in Ghana, marking significant advancements in the country's transport infrastructure.
Beyond his business achievements, Alhaji Banda was remembered for his philanthropy, including the refurbishment of the Korle-Bu Surgical Ward and the construction of a mosque. His pioneering efforts in aviation, such as the establishment of Antrak Air on the Accra-Kumasi route, demonstrated his innovative spirit and willingness to challenge conventional limits.
Dr Mbiah concluded by celebrating Alhaji Banda's audacious vision for an efficient transportation system in Ghana, a testament to his enduring legacy in the maritime and transport sectors.
