Accra: Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, has outlined plans to renovate the Adenkrebi Community-Based Health Planning and Service (CHIPS) Compound within the Ga East Municipality to improve healthcare delivery. She emphasized the necessity of the renovation, highlighting that the facility is structurally compromised and poses safety concerns for both patients and staff. A contractor is expected to visit the site soon to assess and provide cost estimates.
According to Ghana News Agency, the MP revealed her plans as she donated essential medical supplies and equipment to outreach facilities within the constituency. This initiative aims to strengthen primary healthcare delivery and improve maternal and child health services in the municipality. The donation included items such as plastic chairs, weighing scales, blood pressure monitors, and glucometers, which were presented to the Ga East Municipal Health Directorate at a ceremony attended by health officials and community leaders.
Faustina Elikplim Akurugu noted that the gesture followed a tour she conducted upon assuming office, during which she assessed the state of health infrastructure and services in collaboration with the Municipal Health Directorate. She observed that many health facilities were lacking basic equipment needed for quality service delivery, with the Adenkrebi CHPS compound being particularly compromised. The MP stressed that while challenges persist, this donation marks the beginning of sustained efforts to revamp the health sector in Dome-Kwabenya.
The MP also announced plans to procure motorbikes for nurses serving in hard-to-reach areas to enhance mobility and outreach efforts. Dr. Maame Yaa Nhyira Essel, the Municipal Health Director, expressed profound appreciation for the MP's commitment to public health. Dr. Essel highlighted the significance of the donation in enhancing child welfare clinics, wellness screenings, and community outreach programs.
Dr. Essel explained that the equipment will be distributed across all CHPS zones in the municipality to support routine child weighing, maternal services, and community wellness checks. The availability of blood pressure monitors and glucometers will enable community health nurses to screen adults and elderly persons for hypertension and diabetes during home visits and outreach points, allowing for early detection and timely interventions.
Dr. Essel emphasized the urgency of community-level screening, as non-communicable diseases like hypertension and diabetes remain prevalent in the Ga East Municipality. She appealed to private sector actors and other stakeholders to emulate the MP's gesture and support public health delivery in underserved communities, noting that every contribution makes a difference in creating a healthy and productive society.
