Wassa amenfi east: Blue Water Guards in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region have launched a significant operation against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, along water bodies and forest reserves in the area.
According to Ghana News Agency, the operation targeted illegal miners wreaking havoc between Asikuma and Mensahkrom, as well as on the Eshire River at Wassa Akropong. The miners have been accused of damaging roads and waterways with their activities. Upon reaching Mensahkrom, the taskforce discovered illegal mining operations directly on the road, exacerbating its already poor condition.
During the operation, the team destroyed 30 Chanfang engines, 18 pumping machines, 19 shovels, five hammers, over 100 ‘outers’, two diggers, a pipeline, 50 washing boards, and more than 50 washing blankets. Additionally, five makeshift shelters were set ablaze, one gallon of diesel was seized, and a tricycle was impounded.
Three suspects were arrested and handed over to the Wassa Akropong Police Command for further investigation. Following the raid, the Guards met with the local committee chairman and the chief, who provided two excavators and four culverts to help repair portions of the damaged road.
The operation underscores the Blue Water Guards’ commitment to safeguarding communities, roads, and water bodies from the detrimental effects of illegal mining in the Wassa Amenfi area.
