Berekum: The Berekum Traditional Council in the Bono Region announced that the Kingmakers have successfully chosen the rightful candidate to ascend to the Berekum Paramount stool. This decision comes two years after the demise of the late Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II, the Paramount Chief of the Berekum Traditional Area, who passed away on June 9, 2023, at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital. The late chief was known in his private life as Dr Leonard Ofori, a German-trained medical practitioner.
According to Ghana News Agency, Osabarima Nana Agyeman Asomah Sabi II, the Krontrihene of the Berekum Traditional Council, stated that the rightful candidate would be outdoored soon and encouraged the community to remain calm. Osabarima Sabi II, who also serves as the Chief of Senase within the traditional area, shared this information during an interaction with some chiefs, queens, and members of the public at a dinner he hosted to celebrate his 70th birthday at Senase. He called for cooperation from the chiefs and people for the upcoming enstoolment of the new paramount chief.
Osabarima Sabi II assured that the kingmakers adhered strictly to the cultural and traditional processes in selecting the candidate, urging the youth to respect the decision. He emphasized that neither the traditional council nor the kingmakers were influenced during the selection process. He highlighted the negative impact of chieftaincy disputes on development and called for peace and social cohesion now that a candidate has been selected.
He also encouraged the community to focus on the area’s development rather than engaging in traditional conflicts that hinder progress. Osabarima Sabi II recounted a past incident where unidentified individuals set his private residence on fire three years ago due to a chieftaincy dispute. Despite this, he emphasized the importance of sustaining and protecting the current peace, urging unity and contribution towards the holistic development of the traditional area.
