Accra: Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, has inspired students from the Volta Region by sharing his personal journey from poverty to success. He urged them to pursue education as a pathway to greater achievements.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Afenyo-Markin, during an event where he donated GHS 105,000 to 33 university students from the Volta Region for their tuition fees, emphasized the importance of perseverance and faith in overcoming life’s challenges. He recounted his own experiences of hardship, noting, “We have seen life a bit and so, if people talk about poverty, I know what it is. I have seen poverty before, but here I am. So, please don’t give up.”
The Effutu legislator encouraged the students to seize the opportunities provided to them, stressing that life, while challenging, can lead to significant accomplishments with determination and faith in God. “I’m offering a helping hand, so take advantage of it. Learn, build capacity and move on.Life has never been easy, it’s rough but with your faith in God, trust me, no danger can befall you,” he stated.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin shared anecdotes from his life, illustrating how his early struggles and the support from benevolent individuals helped shape his future. He noted that his education was made possible by the generosity of others, such as Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom’s Bursary, which helped pay his final year fees.
Expressing gratitude, Mr. Gideon Senator Xorvi, President of the Volta Students Association at the University of Ghana, acknowledged the impact of the assistance and vowed to excel in their studies.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin, whose father hails from Tsiame in the Volta Region and mother from Winneba in the Central Region, has an impressive educational background himself. Despite early life challenges, he studied law at Buckingham University and later obtained a master’s degree in international politics and security studies at Bradford University. His dedication to education is further reflected in initiatives like the ‘One Teacher, One Laptop’ programme and the construction of libraries in his constituency.
