Hohoe: The 54th Annual Volta Regional Basic School Inter-District Sports Festival is currently taking place in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region. This marks the first time the Municipality is hosting the festival, which will see participants from all 18 Municipal and District areas competing in various field and track events.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Victor Kwaku Kovey, the Hohoe Municipal Director of Education, emphasized that the competition would result in winners, and encouraged participants not to view themselves as failures if they do not win a medal. He expressed that any setbacks should serve as motivation to excel in future endeavors.
Mr. Francis Yao Agbemadi, the Volta Regional Director of Education, highlighted that the competition celebrates youth, talent, regional unity, and the enduring values of discipline, perseverance, and fair play. He noted that sports and games have been a fundamental part of the educational calendar, although they were disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. The gathering signifies a return and renewal of commitment to sports as a crucial tool for education and empowerment.
Mr. Agbemadi further stated that the competition offers a platform for building confidence, lifelong friendships, and leadership skills, beyond just winning trophies. He urged participants to compete with fairness, avoid drug use, build friendships, and behave responsibly. Additionally, he called for vigilant supervision, particularly at the accommodation sites for participating learners.
Mr. Prosper Kumi, the Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), assured that the Assembly would provide support to ensure the event's success and advised learners to seek assistance from their teachers as needed.
Domingo Magdalene, a participant, took the athlete's oath on behalf of all participants, pledging to abide by the competition's rules. Madam Annette Ama Aboagye, the Agortime Ziope District P.E. Coordinator, took the officials' oath, promising to adjudicate the games and sports in the true spirit of sportsmanship and in accordance with the rules governing the games.
