Accra: Absa Bank Ghana Limited has been unveiled as the headline sponsor for the 2025 Black Star Marathon after a successful launch in the city. The marathon, scheduled for July 26, 2025, will both commence and conclude at Independence Square in Accra.
According to Ghana News Agency, this year’s marathon is themed ‘Your Story Matters’ and will feature a 42.2 km race, including a wheelchair event for both men and women, as well as a 10km run, walk, and jog. Dr. Eric Kwame Adae, Founder and President of the Black Star Marathon, emphasized that the event is more than just a race. He described it as a celebration of a movement and a statement, urging participants to honor every victory, struggle, comeback, and heartbeat.
Dr. Adae highlighted the marathon’s aim to unite people through running, inspired by the spirit of Pan-Africanist Marcus Mosiah Garvey. He noted that the Black Star is a symbol of hope and freedom, making the marathon a testament to what is possible when running with purpose and unity. The event seeks to inspire participants to run for various causes, supporting charities aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals while promoting tourism in Ghana.
Nana Essilfuah Tamakloe, Marketing and Corporate Affairs Director at Absa Bank Ghana Ltd, shared the bank’s excitement in supporting an initiative that promotes wellness. She emphasized the power of sports to unite people and reiterated the bank’s commitment to empowering communities and investing in health and well-being.
Prof. Kobby Mensah, CEO of Ghana Tourism Development Company, pledged support for the marathon, aiming to enhance sports tourism. He announced plans for a sports parade by athletes through Accra’s streets, aiming to position the event as one of the world’s premier marathons.
The marathon is supported by various partners, including the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Ghana Athletics, Silver Star Tower, Japan Motors, The Trust Hospital, Wisdom Boxing Gym, and Runathon Global.
