Agona East: Mr. Yaw Collins, an Okada rider aged 30, died on arrival at the Swedru Municipal Government hospital following a head-on collision with another motorbike on the Nyansakyere/Kwesi Twi Krom road in the Agona East District of the Central region. Two others, Messrs Kobena Ogyam and Kofi Agyapong, who were on the other motorbike, sustained varying degrees of injuries and are in critical condition.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Ogyam, whose condition is critical, has been referred to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for further treatment, while Mr. Agyapong is receiving treatment at Swedru Municipal Hospital. Mr. Albert Quainoo, former Assemblyman for Kwesi Twi Krom/Fawomanye Electoral Area, stated in an interview that the cause of the accident is not yet known. He noted that the Agona Kwanyako police have initiated investigations after visiting the accident scene.
The former Assemblyman revealed that the body of Yaw Collins has been deposited at the Swedru Municipal Government hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy. Mr. Quainoo used the opportunity to caution Okada riders to ride carefully and avoid alcoholism or the use of hard drugs to ensure the safety of life and property.
In a similar incident, another Okada rider, Mr. Kofi Kakra, aged 24, was allegedly attacked and killed by armed robbers on the Okotokwaa/Otwekrom road near Kwanyako in the Agona East District. Mr. Quainoo reported that the robbers attacked the Okada rider around 1300hrs on Sunday and took away his motorbike. Upon hearing news of the attack, the youth of Otwekrom rushed to the scene and transported the victim, who had received deep machete wounds in the face, to Swedru Municipal Government Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Mr. Quainoo said the youth traced the robbers to Awutu Bontrase in Awutu Senya West, where the motorbike of the deceased was found abandoned on the roadside. The body has also been deposited at the Swedru hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.
