Two Killed in Yanyuoyiri Community, Police Commence Investigation

Accra: The Upper West Regional Police Command has initiated investigations following the killing of two individuals in the Yanyuoyiri community of the Wa East District. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 19, 2025, and has prompted a response from law enforcement authorities.

According to Ghana News Agency, a statement signed by Mr. Darko Offei Lomotey, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, revealed that the victims, Marifa Osman, aged 47, and Sampa Abubakari, aged 35, were allegedly shot by armed individuals while on their way to inspect their farmland. The police have visited the scene and collected the bodies along with pertinent evidence.

The police statement also noted that personnel have been deployed to the community to maintain order as the investigation progresses. Efforts are being made to apprehend the suspects involved in the attack. Furthermore, members of the Regional Security Council and the Wa East District Security Council visited the community on Thursday, July 24, 2025, to promote peace and dialogue.

The bodies were taken to the Wa Regional Hospital for autopsy and subsequently released to the families on Monday, July 21, 2025, for burial in accordance with Islamic traditions. The police have called on the public to remain calm and assist in the investigation by providing credible information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bawa Wahid Najua, a brother of one of the deceased, informed the Ghana News Agency that some suspects have been identified and reported to the police. Although the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, Mr. Najua suggested it might stem from a longstanding land dispute. The families of the victims are urging the police to take necessary actions to ensure justice is served.
