Sunyani Queen-mother Appeals Bono House of Chiefs Verdict

Sunyani: Nana Akosua Dua Asor Sika Brayie II, the Paramount Queen-mother of the Sunyani Traditional Area, has filed an appeal at the National House of Chiefs, seeking to overturn a previous ruling by the Bono Regional House of Chiefs regarding an injunction application.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Queen-mother had initially filed an injunction challenging the legitimacy of the enstoolment of Ogyeamansan Korkor II and requested that he be restrained from acting as the Paramount Chief. The injunction also sought to prevent Nana Kwaku Sarbeng II, the Akwamuhene and Acting President of the Sunyani Traditional Council, from introducing Ogyeamansan Korkor II as the paramount chief.

The injunction, filed in January 2025, was subsequently dismissed by a jury from the Judicial Committee of the House, which ruled in favor of Ogyeamansan Korkor, allowing him to perform his duties as President of the Sunyani Traditional Council.

An affidavit, filed by Kwame Twumasi-Awuah of Twumasi Associates, a Sunyani-based legal firm, and shared with Ghana News Agency, called for the National House of Chiefs to reconstitute a panel to review the petition. The affidavit argued that the judicial committee exercised its discretion inappropriately by denying the injunction despite evidence suggesting that the first respondent was not validly nominated, elected, and installed as chief.

The affidavit further contended that the judicial committee made legal errors by refusing the application, as there was substantial evidence indicating the installation of the first respondent was not published in accordance with the law. It also claimed that the second respondent lacked the capacity and customary right to nominate and install the first respondent as paramount chief.

The appeal requests the National House of Chiefs to annul the previous ruling, citing that the installation was not published in accordance with section 62(2) of Act 759.
