Sunyani Municipal Assembly Initiates Monthly Clean-Up Exercise to Combat Waste

Sunyani: The Sunyani Municipal Assembly (SMA) has announced the commencement of a monthly clean-up exercise aimed at controlling filth and plastic waste to enhance sanitation in the municipality. The announcement was made by Mr. Vincent Antwi Agyei, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, during a news conference in Sunyani. The exercise is scheduled to take place on the first Saturday of every month, starting from May 10, 2025.

According to Ghana News Agency, the clean-up initiative is a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, intended to sustain and reinforce the re-introduction of the National Sanitation Day by his government. The focus of the Assembly is on prioritizing sanitation and effective waste management to maintain cleanliness in Sunyani and prevent the outbreak of communicable diseases within the municipality.

Mr. Agyei urged the media to support the initiative by raising public awareness and educating the community about the importance of environmental cleanliness. He also emphasized that major shops, stores, and businesses would be required to remain closed from 0600 hours to 1000 hours during the clean-up activities, calling for public cooperation in this regard.

A taskforce will be deployed across the municipality to ensure compliance, with warnings issued to those who fail to adhere to the directive of closing their shops during the specified hours. Mr. Agyei mentioned that the Assembly had engaged with stakeholders and anticipated full participation from the community in the upcoming exercise.
