SOUTH AFRICAN INDEPENDENT POWER PRODUCERS PROGRAMME TO BE EXPANDED

Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas says South Africa’s independent power producers (IPP) programme, which was initially introduced to encourage development of renewable energy, will continue and will be expanded to include private sector investment in coal and gas-fired power plants.

Jonas was speaking to the media ahead of the tabling of the Medium Term Budget Statement by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan in Parliament here Wednesday.

There has been growing confusion over the future of the government’s IPP programme but Jonas said there was no change in the IPP programme.

“What’s clear is that the policy has not changed, the conditions of the contract will have to be met by (State-owned power utility) Eskom.”
