Accra: The Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, along with the Leadership, has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic passing of senior state officials, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who perished in a helicopter crash.
According to Ghana News Agency, a statement signed by Mr. David Sabastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations for Parliament, confirmed the devastating news of the deaths. The statement conveyed Parliament's deep sadness and extended condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Republic.
Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed was serving as a National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Tamale Central. The crash also claimed the lives of Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; Mr. Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, the pilot. Additionally, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, the co-pilot, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, a crew member, were among the deceased.
The Parliamentary Caucus referred to the loss as a 'devastating blow' to the nation, honoring the victims for their dedication to public service. In remembrance, a national day of mourning has been declared, with flags flying at half-mast across the country. Meanwhile, an investigation into the cause of the crash is currently underway.
