Keta: The Department of Social Welfare in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region is aiming to enroll 1,500 new beneficiaries into the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme. The initiative seeks to expand the programme’s reach, providing financial support to more vulnerable households in the area.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Nii Ashie Kotey, the Unit Head at the Department of Social Welfare at Keta, noted that there are currently 633 households across 35 communities, including Abor, Anyako, and Tsiame. “The programme provides cash transfers to extremely poor households with vulnerable members, such as the elderly, persons with disabilities, orphaned and vulnerable children among others,” he stated.
He explained that the department plans to exceed its current capacity to register and increase the number of beneficiaries, aiming to reduce poverty and improve the livelihoods of the most vulnerable populations in the municipality. Mr. Kotey emphasized that engaging with communities to raise awareness about LEAP and its benefits is key to achieving the target of 1,500 new beneficiaries.
The department is initiating engagements to identify potential beneficiaries and inform them about the application process. Mr. Kotey highlighted the importance of meeting specific eligibility criteria, including extreme poverty and the presence of vulnerable members in a household, to ensure the programme reaches those who need it most.
The application process involves a thorough assessment of households to determine eligibility. The department collaborates closely with community leaders and assembly members to identify potential beneficiaries and facilitate the application process. Mr. Kotey noted the significant impact of the programme, with cash transfers helping households meet basic needs and invest in their future.
Communities in the Keta Municipality have responded positively to the LEAP programme, expressing gratitude for the support, which has helped build trust and ensure the programme’s success. Despite facing challenges such as ensuring eligibility criteria are met and effective resource management, the Department of Social Welfare remains committed to supporting vulnerable populations in the municipality.
Some individuals expressed satisfaction with the department’s efforts, highlighting its commitment to supporting vulnerable populations in Keta Municipality.
