Accra: The Greater Accra Table Tennis Association (GATTA), with support from the Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), is set to organise the National Open Table Tennis tournament on Saturday, August 30, 2025. The one-day event at the D.G. Hathiramani Sports Hall at the Accra Sports Stadium aims to bring together table tennis enthusiasts as part of the iconic Homowo festival.
According to Ghana News Agency, the tournament will see participation from over 281 table tennis players from across the country, spanning various age groups. The Homowo National Open tournament traces its beginnings to 2006, when the inaugural DHL Ga Homowo Open attracted more than 100 players at the Borstal Institute.
Over the years, the tournament has crowned many champions, including notable names such as Mohammed Ali, Celia Baah-Danso, Emmanuel Commey, and Eva Adom Amankwaa, along with international victors like Nigeria's Sunday Ayodele. The upcoming edition is expected to feature intense competition and memorable matches.
Mr. Mawuko Afadzinu, President of the GTTA, highlighted the significance of the event, stating that the Homowo National Open Championship is more than just a competition. He emphasized its role as a platform for nurturing talent, promoting cultural identity, and enhancing Ghana's standing in the global table tennis community.
