Ghana Armed Forces Receives Democracy Cup Trophy

Accra: Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clerk to Parliament, presented the 2025 Democracy Cup trophy to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in Accra on Wednesday, August 27. The ceremonial event marks the commencement of a series of visits leading up to this year's annual football match.

According to Ghana News Agency, the presentation ceremony took place in Accra, where Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, along with other senior officers, accepted the trophy on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong. Rear Admiral Bessing expressed the military's support for the initiative and its role in promoting national cohesion. He emphasized the Armed Forces' commitment to participating in the event and highlighted football's historical role as a unifying tool, particularly in conflict areas.

Mr. Djietror highlighted that the Democracy Cup has become a staple on the national calendar, endorsed by key government figures including the President, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Chief Justice. He described the competition as a symbol of national unity and development, underscoring its role in fostering a unified national identity.

The second edition of the Democracy Cup, set for 5th September at the University of Ghana Stadium, will feature a match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics. Prior to the match, the trophy will be presented to various state institutions, such as the Presidency, the Chief Justice, the Electoral Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police. This year's visits began at the Ministry of Defence, following a postponement of last year's planned presentation to the Armed Forces.

Launched in 2024, the Democracy Cup is part of an initiative to leverage football as a tool for civic education and national unity. The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Bagbin, has been instrumental in driving this effort, recognizing the sport's potential to enhance understanding of Ghana's democratic framework. The match venue has been relocated from the Accra Sports Stadium to the University of Ghana Stadium to provide better facilities, security, and an improved experience for all attendees.
