Government’s Approach to Galamsey Praised by Petroleum Hub CEO

Accra: Dr Toni Aubynn, Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC), has praised the government's approach to combating illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, describing it as consistent and based on well-thought-out policies. In an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency's Digital Team, Dr Aubynn emphasized that the government's measures to address the issue were not spontaneous but rather the outcome of carefully planned strategies developed over several years.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Aubynn highlighted initiatives such as the re-categorisation of mining activities, the introduction of tracking systems, the establishment of Goldbod, and the promotion of mining cooperatives. These measures, he noted, were part of the party's manifesto before taking office, demonstrating its commitment to tackling the galamsey problem. Dr Aubynn also criticized previous administrations for lacking commitment and enacting laws that allowed mining in forests, contrasting them with the current government's dedication to finding the right solutions.

Dr Aubynn addressed calls for declaring a state of emergency to combat the situation, arguing that Ghana had not reached that stage and warning that such a measure could have broader implications beyond the galamsey issue. He expressed support for the government's strategy of designating water bodies and forest reserves as security zones, describing it as a pragmatic approach similar to a 'mini-state of emergency' that protects critical natural resources without disrupting other livelihoods.

Dr Aubynn underscored the importance of protecting water bodies, stating that it was unfair for individuals to pollute them for personal gain while depriving others of clean water. He urged the public to remain patient and support the government's ongoing efforts, highlighting that consistency and persistence were crucial in the national fight against illegal mining.
