GJA President Donates to Alajo Mosque Ahead of Eid al-Fitr

Accra: Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has generously donated food items to the Alajo Central Mosque in Accra and two other mosques in the community. The contribution, which includes 100 bags of rice, 25 cartons each of cooking oil and tinned tomatoes, was given to mosque leaders to support the Muslim community during the upcoming Eid al-Fitr celebrations. An undisclosed cash donation was also made to the Imams for prayers and welfare support.

According to Ghana News Agency, Eid al-Fitr is an annual event marking the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting for Muslims. The celebration's exact date remains uncertain, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon on the 29th day of Ramadan. During this period, Muslims are encouraged to be charitable towards the less privileged and vulnerable members of society. Many Muslims are preparing for the festivities, reflecting on the importance of generosity and community support.

Mr Dwumfour, who grew up in Alajo, shared his experiences with Muslim neighbors, highlighting the significance of interfaith solidarity. He expressed, "I am a Christian, but I grew up eating with my Muslim brothers during Salah. Religion should unite us, not divide us." He emphasized the shared worship of one God among Christians and Muslims and praised Ghana's peaceful coexistence.

Describing the donation as a 'homecoming' gesture, Mr Dwumfour recalled praying alongside Muslims in the same mosque during his childhood. The Alajo Central Mosque holds personal significance for him, representing a longstanding symbol of community and faith. He also mentioned his previous donation to over 1,000 households in the community during the Christmas season, underscoring his dedication to inclusive philanthropy.

The event was attended by journalists, community leaders, and mosque members, who commended the gesture as a model for promoting religious harmony in Ghana. Sheikh Abubakari Swallah, the Imam of the Mosque, expressed gratitude to the GJA President for his kind gesture and advised the youth to celebrate Eid al-Fitr in accordance with Islamic principles.
