Colchester: A male zebra named Ziggy died after a female rhino unintentionally punctured his stomach, a zoo official reported. Colchester Zoo, located in England's east, stated that the rhino, Astrid, was sparring with her son Tayo when she attempted to move Ziggy out of the way, leading to the tragic incident.According to Ghana News Agency, Ziggy succumbed to his injuries within minutes on Friday. The zoo mentioned that Ziggy had coexisted with other species, including rhinos, in the mixed-species African habitat since November 2017. The sparring between Astrid and Tayo was described as regular and natural behavior for rhinos. However, in this instance, Astrid's attempt to move Ziggy resulted in the fatal injury.In response to the incident, the zoo stated that they would review animal care practices to minimize the risk of similar incidents in the future. The animal care team plans to closely monitor the behavior of the animals in the coming weeks. The zoo expressed its devastation over the loss of Ziggy , noting that he was a beloved animal who will be dearly missed. The zoo also extended thanks to supporters and praised their animal care team for handling the situation professionally.
