Accra: Two women who made abusive and offensive statements against President John Dramani Mahama concerning the August 6 helicopter crash have been granted bail. Appearing before an Adenta Circuit Court, Priscilla Duah Birago, a 29-year-old National Service Person, and Charity Dede Tetteh, a 29-year-old beautician, were admitted to bail in the sum of GHC100,000 each with two sureties.
According to Ghana News Agency, the court stipulated that one of the sureties should be justified with any property. Tetteh and Birago have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit crime with offensive conduct and offensive conduct to the breach of peace. They are alleged to have conspired to make offensive statements, expressing that they would have been happier if President Mahama was involved in the helicopter crash and insinuating harm against him.
The court, presided over by Mrs. Angela Attache, admonished the accused persons to avoid trouble, noting the sensitivity of the matter. A team of three lawyers, led by Mr. Enoch Anhwere Afoakwa, stated they would advise the accused individuals.
Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, leading the prosecution, informed the court that the police were yet to seek a High Court order to access the mobile phones of the accused. However, Chief Inspector Lanyo did not oppose the bail granted to the accused. The case has been adjourned to November 5, 2025.
The prosecution’s case outlines that on August 6, 2025, Tetteh and Birago hosted a live-streamed discussion on their social media platform, TikTok, during which they made the offensive statements against President Mahama. Birago shared these statements on her TikTok account under the name ‘Abena Birago.’ Following this, the accused were arrested by law enforcement for further investigation. A forensic capture of the live stream was obtained as evidence.
