Tema West Social Welfare Organises Free Health Screening for the Aged

Tema: The Tema West Municipal Office of the Social Welfare and Community Development, in collaboration with the Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA), has organised a free health screening initiative for the elderly residents of the municipality. The event aimed to commemorate the International Day of Older Persons and provide essential health services to the aged community.

According to Ghana News Agency, the screening covered general illnesses, eye and ear problems, and hypertension. Additionally, the participants received guidance on maintaining good health practices. This initiative underscores the municipality's commitment to ensuring the well-being of its senior citizens.

Madam Clara Sowah, the Director for Social Welfare and Community Development in Tema West, advocated for the establishment of a dedicated shelter for the aged in the area. She emphasized that the Social Services Committee had discussed the necessity of such a facility, highlighting the challenges faced by the elderly, particularly those with dementia, who seek assistance from the office. Madam Sowah recounted instances where she personally financed temporary accommodations for disoriented elderly individuals due to the absence of a proper shelter.

She also urged families to cherish and care for their elderly relatives, stressing the importance of valuing the aged, as everyone eventually transitions into senior citizenship. 'I know one day I will also be a senior citizen, so it's important that I start helping them now so that when it gets to my time, I will also get the needed help,' she remarked.

Mr. Ludwig Teye Totimeh, the Tema West Municipal Chief Executive, praised the resilience and capability of the municipality's aged population. He noted that the event provided an opportunity to engage with older persons, offering them health screenings, awareness sessions, and necessary medications. Mr. Totimeh also highlighted the lessons that the youth could learn from the elderly, particularly regarding health consciousness, regular checkups, and proper nutrition.
