Sunyani: Commercial drivers and passengers using the Sunyani-Berekum highway have called on the police to beef up personnel presence to control the recurring trend of armed robberies on the stretch.
According to Ghana News Agency, the drivers reported that armed robbers have been terrorizing them and passengers, snatching their mobile phones and other valuables. In an interview with GNA in Sunyani, Mr. Yaw Kusi, one of the drivers, recounted his sad experience of a similar robbery attack on the highway. He described an incident where armed robbers emerged from the bush around 1800 hours at a particular spot on the stretch which has no mobile phone network coverage, making it impossible for them to call for assistance.
Other passengers, who also expressed their frustrations, told GNA that the frequent armed robbery attacks on the highway remained challenging for them. They added that the situation discouraged some of the drivers from using the highway in the evenings. One of the passengers, who spoke to GNA on condition of anonymity, described the situation as frustrating and called on the police to take action and bring the situation under control.
