Somanya: The Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly and Somanya Police have initiated the enforcement of new transport regulations to address congestion, streamline operations of tricycle taxis known as 'Pragyia', and promote discipline and safety in commercial transport within the town.
According to Ghana News Agency, the exercise commenced on Monday, September 15, 2025, with the primary goals of regulating passenger loading, alleviating congestion at the Somanya roundabout, and ensuring the full functionality of the Akutunya Main Station. This initiative follows a crucial meeting on September 8 involving Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Mr. Francis Addo Akumatey, senior Assembly officials, District Police Commander Superintendent Kingsley Abrokwa, and leaders from transport unions and tricycle taxi rider groups.
During an inspection of the enforcement activities, Mr. Akumatey clarified that the initiative is not designed to inconvenience drivers or riders but aims to restore order and enhance safety. He emphasized that tricycle taxis and commercial vehicles are prohibited from parking or loading at the Somanya roundabout, and tricycles are restricted from operating beyond specified zones such as the DVLA and the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD).
Mr. Akumatey further stated that all long-distance commercial vehicles are now required to operate from the Akutunya Main Station, rather than the Taxi Rank or Trom Junction, warning that violators would incur a fine of GH?200 payable at the Assembly's Finance Office.
A dedicated taskforce comprising police officers, Assembly staff, and transport union representatives has been deployed to ensure compliance with the new measures. Superintendent Abrokwa affirmed the Police Command's commitment to sustaining the enforcement and taking action against non-compliant drivers or riders.
On the first day of enforcement, inspections were conducted at Trom Junction, the Somanya roundabout, the Taxi Rank, and Akutunya Main Station. Specific loading points have been allocated for Pragyia riders at the Taxi Rank and Akutunya Station, with initial compliance reported as generally satisfactory.
The Assembly and Police Command are urging all drivers, tricycle riders, and transport operators to fully adhere to the new regulations to help decongest Somanya and contribute to the municipality's development.
