Several Dumping Sites Cleared in Tarkwa Nsuaem to Maintain Public Health

Tarkwa nsuaem: Several dumping sites located in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality have been cleared by the Environmental Health Unit of the assembly to ensure public health. The areas include Nana Konnie, Railway quarters, and Kwabedu dumping sites.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Alex Damtey, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer, explained during the exercise that Mr. Ebenezer Cobbinah, the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has been addressing waste management issues. The MCE assured residents that all heaped waste would be evacuated within four months. The exercise, which began three weeks ago, has now reached the Nana Konnie dumping site.

Mr. Damtey stated that the goal is to remove all waste from the current location, transport it to the final disposal site in Aboso, and then proceed to clear other areas. Weekends were chosen for the evacuation due to more manageable traffic conditions compared to weekdays.

The assembly received ten skip containers from Gold Fields Ghana Limited (GFGL), and plans are in place to station two containers at heavily populated areas such as Nana Konnie, Nzema line, and Kwabedu after the evacuation. Mr. Damtey mentioned that the assembly's refuse truck, along with an additional truck promised by Zoomlion, would be used to enhance waste management in the municipality.

He observed that at some dumping sites, containers were not full, but waste was scattered around as children could not access the containers. He urged the public to ensure that individuals capable of using the containers properly are sent to prevent littering.

The President has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to enforce sanitation by-laws. Mr. Damtey affirmed their commitment to comply with the President's directive, stating that although officers are already performing their duties, efforts will be intensified. Residents will be continually reminded to dispose of waste in approved areas rather than unauthorized locations.
