Prominent Dignitaries Gather to Pay Last Respects at Asantehemaa’s Burial Rites

Kumasi: The Doteyie (burial rites) of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, enters its final day with prominent personalities continuing to pay their last respects and commiserate with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The event marks a significant occasion in the cultural and traditional calendar of the Ashanti Kingdom.

According to Ghana News Agency, among the dignitaries expected to observe the last day of the Doteyie are President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, and former Presidents Kuffour and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo. Other notable attendees include former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Eswatini, Russell Dlamini, and his Deputy, Thulisile Dladla. The gathering is further graced by the presence of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohunu, the Police Management Board, the Deputy Minister for Defence, Mr Brogya Gyamfi, and senior members of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The ceremony also sees attendance from judicial and financial dignitaries such as the Acting Chief Justice, Mr Paul Baffoe Bonney, the Deputy Governor of New York City, Dr Bishop Kwasi Adu Amankwaa, and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, along with his deputies. The event draws former first Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, Mr Allan Kyeremanteng, former Minister of Trade, and Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyepong, former MP for Assin Central, among others, reflecting the widespread respect for the late queen mother.

A church service is scheduled to be conducted for the late Asantehemaa before the body is carried through the city of Kumasi to the royal mausoleum (Baamu) at Breman for interment. In a measure to maintain order during the solemn proceedings, a curfew has been imposed in the city from 1800 hours on Thursday, September 18, 2025, until dawn the following day, preventing any interference with the burial procession during the night.
