President Mahama Pledges Support for Ghana’s Chieftaincy Institution

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the government's dedication to bolstering the chieftaincy institution in Ghana. He emphasized that beyond infrastructure development, efforts are being made to restore the dignity and enhance the capacity of traditional chieftaincy institutions.

According to Ghana News Agency, President Mahama made these remarks during a courtesy visit from the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, at the Presidency. The delegation, which included paramount chiefs, was there to congratulate President Mahama on his significant victory in the December 7, 2024, general election. This visit followed a recent similar one by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu and his chiefs.

During the Yaa Naa's visit, President Mahama highlighted the creation of the Traditional Leadership Support Fund under the 2025 budget. This fund aims to finance the preservation of royal archives, rehabilitate palaces, and provide logistical support for traditional areas, including the Dagbon Traditional Council. He stressed the importance of tradition in national development and governance, vowing that the government would partner with traditional rulers, valuing their counsel and role in governance.

President Mahama also commended the Yaa Naa's leadership in promoting peace beyond Dagbon's boundaries. He acknowledged the Yaa Naa's interventions in resolving disputes across Mampusi, Gonja, and the Eastern Corridor, which have been instrumental in reducing tensions and preventing escalation. President Mahama expressed gratitude to the Yaa Naa, recalling a fraternal visit to the Yagbonwura, which strengthened ties between the Gonjas and Dagombas.

Looking ahead, President Mahama expressed confidence in Yaa Naa Abukari's legacy as a peacemaker and a statesman contributing to a united Ghana. He assured support for the upcoming fifth anniversary of the Yaa Naa's enskinment, an event of national significance. President Mahama emphasized the importance of unity and the coexistence of tradition and modernity for national prosperity.

Yaa Naa Abukari expressed confidence in President Mahama's leadership, anticipating an era of growth, peace, and prosperity for Ghana. He highlighted the importance of peace and prosperity for communities and commended the swift actions taken to revitalize the economy and improve Ghanaians' lives. The Yaa Naa urged President Mahama to continue prioritizing people-centered policies to address the needs and welfare of all Ghanaians.
