President Mahama Appoints New Service Chiefs for Ghana Armed Forces

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), has announced changes in the military command with the appointment of new Service Chiefs. Brigadier General William Agyapong has been appointed as the Acting Chief of the Defence Staff.

According to Ghana News Agency, the other appointments include Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu as Acting Chief of Army Staff, Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing as Acting Chief of Naval Staff, Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong as Acting Chief of Air Staff, and Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan as Acting Chief of Staff. A statement signed by Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, indicated that the appointments will take effect from March 24, 2025.

The statement noted that these appointments are pending consultation with the Council of State. Earlier on Monday, the President met with the outgoing Service Chiefs, led by the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, at the Flagstaff House. Mr. Mahama expressed gratitude for their service to the nation and emphasized his willingness to draw on their experiences and knowledge to advance Ghana.
