President Mahama Advances Bawku Peace Initiative with Visit to Nayiri

Nalerigu: President John Dramani Mahama has taken his Bawku Peace Mission engagement to the Overlord of Mamprugu, Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga, at his Palace in Nalerigu, the North East Regional Capital. This engagement underscores the President's commitment to resolving the long-standing conflict in Bawku.

According to Ghana News Agency, the President previously held a similar engagement in Bawku with Zugraan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, the Overlord of the Kusaug Traditional Area in the Upper East Region. While speaking at the Nayiri's Palace in Nalerigu, President Mahama reminisced about his visit during the 2024 election campaign period when he sought the blessings of the Nayiri for the impending elections. President Mahama expressed gratitude, acknowledging the victory as a shared success with the Nayiri, whom he regards as a father figure.

President Mahama addressed the ongoing unrest in Bawku and Walewale, acknowledging the distress it has caused the Nayiri. He reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing peace, emphasizing that his visit to the Nayiri was his first major assignment outside Accra since assuming office, demonstrating the importance he places on resolving the conflict.

The President appealed for restraint and patience from the Nayiri and his subjects, assuring them that efforts were underway to resolve the situation amicably. He explained that his government formation was in progress, and ministerial appointments were ongoing to support the administration's efforts.

President Mahama hinted at a forthcoming invitation to the Nayiri once the government was fully established. He mentioned alerting the Nayiri in advance about the invitation, emphasizing his intention to maintain open communication.

The President also shared insights from his last briefing with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, including discussions about ongoing peace initiatives. He noted the historical role of the Nayiri, the late Yagbonwura, and Otumfuo in resolving the Dagbon crisis and mentioned plans to meet Otumfuo to discuss related matters further. President Mahama assured the Nayiri that he would keep him informed about developments from his meeting with Otumfuo.
